This rich, even opulent, effect of strings on strings is an obvious choice that has lately been gaining overdue recognition. Spanning four centuries and slated to include Schafer’s Theseus, Caplet’s Conte Fantastique, as well as exciting new commissions by Gareth Farr and Caroline Lizotte, the music for this collaboration offers a colorful literary backdrop — often the stuff of lurid stories, myth, and fantasy, with the harp equally a portrayer of the angel and devil. Krutzen’s lyrical and atmospheric playing serves as a magical counterpart to the voluptuous yet crystalline sound of the Formosa Quartet.
Two sample concert programs include:
“Grieg Folklore to Greek Myth”
Edvard Grieg: Quartet
Claude Debussy: Danses
Arnold Bax: Quintet
R. Murray Schafer: Theseus
“Air, Fire, Fantasy, Fate”
Gareth Farr: [20' commission available after January 2016]
Camille Saint-Saëns: Fantaisie for violin and harp
Leoš Janáček: String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”
André Caplet: Conte Fantastique
